WTF is in Our Clothes? 🤔

It’s wild when you think about it. Our clothes are in constant contact with our skin. Day and night, from pajamas to workwear, we spend nearly every hour wrapped in fabrics —but do we really know what’s in them? And more importantly, how they affect our bodies? 👀

For an industry that talks endlessly about ethics and sustainability, we're still missing the mark on one of the biggest risks: the harmful chemicals in the clothes we wear.

Chemical safety in clothing is one of those areas that’s complex, opaque, and not talked about nearly enough. Even for brands that want to get it right, navigating chemical compliance can be a massive challenge.

8,000 chemicals (!!!) are used to turn raw materials into the textiles we wear. And the negative impacts on human health? They’re as diverse as they are alarming:

😬 Skin irritation
😬 Fertility issues
😬 Damage to the nervous system
Even increased cancer risks 😳 —

It’s not just a vague risk—it’s real. And while many of us are hyper-focused on sustainability initiatives, the truth is that the chemicals in our clothing are flying under the radar. 👀

Luckily, in both Europe and the USA, regulations around chemical use are tightening, and consumers are starting to pay more attention. But how many brands are truly prepared to deal with it? And even for the ones trying to do the right thing, keeping up with shifting standards and making sure their products are truly safe is no easy task.

This Tuesday, September 10th, we're hosting Lucy Murphy, Head of Brand Development at OEKO-TEX, for an exclusive webinar inside SFF Insiders, our new membership platform, to dive into all this and more! 🤓

With over a decade of experience in textile development and chemical compliance, Lucy has shaped UK policy, lectured at top universities, contributed to Vogue Business and The Sunday Times, and now, she’s going to break it all down for us:

Testing Textiles for Harmful Chemicals: Why testing is actually vital—not just for consumer health, but for environmental sustainability.

Global Legislative Compliance: What new regulations mean for your brand and how to stay ahead of the game.

Certifications as a Compliance Vehicle: How certifications (like OEKO-TEX®) can help brands adhere to regulations, and better yet, communicate their commitment to ethical practices.

Whether you're already deep into chemical compliance or just starting to dig into the topic, this session will give you the insights and practical steps to get it right. And if you’re just curious about what chemicals are lurking in your clothes, this is a conversation you won’t want to miss.
